Our Story: Helping Cowichan Businesses Grow

It started with a moving truck and a wave.

When my family and I moved to the Cowichan Valley in 2004, something strange happened. Neighbours across the street waved at our moving truck. People smiled and said “good morning” on the way to school. At first, I kept looking over my shoulder to see who they were talking to!

It didn’t take long to realize that this is just how the Valley works. This community has a spirit that blew me away, and it’s why my husband Robert, our two daughters, and I have called it home ever since.

Watching the struggle firsthand.

In 2009, I was managing a shop in Downtown Duncan. I saw how hard local owners work, not just to make a profit, but to survive.

It made my blood boil to see honest people being taken advantage of. I watched owners spend thousands of dollars on “fancy” websites with bells and whistles they didn’t need and didn’t know how to use. I had been building websites since 2000, and I started helping out where I could.

A new way to support local.

I witnessed firsthand how hard small local business owners work just to survive. That’s when I became more than just a shopper; I became an advocate. In 2014, I launched I Love Cowichan. It started as a way to shout out my favourite local businesses and share the stories of the people behind the counters. Over the years, it has grown into a community of neighbours who share the same belief: that our local businesses are the heart of this Valley.

Life eventually threw me a curveball with some health challenges. Because I have to manage my energy carefully, I can’t do the “heavy lifting” for dozens of clients at once.

But I realized that was actually a blessing in disguise.

Instead of doing the work for a few people, I launched Cowichan Digital to share my 20+ years of knowledge with many people. My goal isn’t to sell you a shiny toy you don’t understand. It’s to provide the roadmap, the planning, and the support so you can lead your own business with confidence.
